Nachdem wir die Texaner im Vorprogramm von Blackberry Smoke im niederländischen Weert beleuchtet hatten, bat uns Oktober Promotion im Rahmen ihrer bevorstehenden Rückkehr nach Deutschland im Herbst als Headliner, und anlässlich ihres aktuellen Albums, um ein Interview. Stephan Skolarski stellte Quaker City Night Hawks-Drummer Aaron Haynes die Fragen.
Sounds Of South: Hallo Aaron, Glückwunsch zu eurem starken neuen Album! Wie würdet ihr das neue Werk jemandem beschreiben, der es noch nicht gehört hat?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Als Heavy Texas Rock ’n Roll!
Sounds Of South: Seid ihr mit der Resonanz auf das Album zufrieden?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Ja, die Leute scheinen es zu mögen, wir brauchen einfach nur noch mehr Leute, die es auch zu hören bekommen.
Sounds Of South: Auf eurem Album verbindet ihr sehr viele unterschiedliche Musikstile. Von Southern-Rock zu psychedelischen Elementen in „Grackle King“ oder Blues-Rock auf „Fox in the Henhouse“. Welche Musik von anderen Künstlern hatte einen Einfluss auf diese Platte?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Einige Größen die tiefe Wirkung hier hinterlassen haben, sind ZZ Top, Black Sabbath und Heart.
Sounds Of South: „Colorado“ ist ein sehr persönliches Lied. Ist es für euch wichtig in euren Songs persönliche Erfahrungen einzubringen?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Absolut! Wir wären nichts ohne unsere Erfahrungen. Die Stücke sind nicht immer autobiografisch, aber manchmal schreibst du über Dinge, die du kennst.
Sounds Of South: Was hat es für euch bedeutet mit Austin Jenkins zusammenzuarbeiten? Hatte er einen großen Einfluss auf eure musikalischen Vorstellungen?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Wir respektieren Austin Jenkins und Josh Block, ja, wir vertrauen ihnen, was das Wichtigste ist. Wir hatten schon eine gute Vorstellung, was wir erreichen wollten, als wir ins Studio gingen, aber sie waren sehr hilfreich, als wir uns festfuhren. Sie machten, was große Produzenten dann tun: Sie halfen uns sehr kreativ, der Scheibe Leben einzuhauchen.
Sounds Of South: Das Niles City Studio ist für seinen Lo-Fi Sound bekannt. Was bevorzugt ihr: Streaming oder Analog?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Beides. Wir schrecken nicht vor Technik zurück, aber wir bevorzugen den Sound und die Wärme der analogen Gangart… und wir sind eine lebendige Band, die gerne zusammenspielt.
Sounds Of South: Ihr seid inzwischen sehr erfolgreich. Hat sich dadurch etwas für euch verändert?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Nicht viel. Wir arbeiten kontinuierlich und pushen uns, besser zu werden. Jetzt sind wir auf den Geschmack gekommen und wollen natürlich mehr.
Sounds Of South: Quaker City Night Hawks ist ein eher untypischer Bandname. Was hat es mit dem Band-Namen auf sich?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Der Name rührt von einem Mark Twain-Buch „Die Arglosen im Ausland“. Seine Kumpels, mit denen er spielte und feierte, nannten sich Night Hawks und das Schiff, auf dem sie sich in der Geschichte befanden, wurde Quaker City genannt. Somit erklärt es sich von selbst.
Sounds Of South: Mit wem würdet ihr gerne mal zusammen auf der Bühne stehen oder auf Tour gehen?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks:
Wir würden die Bühne gerne mit Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, The Record Company oder irgendeinem der Projekte von Jack Whites teilen… auch Post Malone wäre verdammt klasse.
Sounds Of South: Worauf freut ihr euch bei der anstehenden Tour am meisten?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Zu den tollen europäischen Fans zurückzukehren. Die hören sich tatsächlich Musik an. Es ist erfrischend vor Publikum zu spielen, das Achtung vor Musik hat und jedes Detail mitbekommen möchte.

Sounds Of South: Are you happy with the feedback on this record?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Yes, People seem to like it now we just need more people to hear it.
Sounds Of South: Your record combines many different kinds of music. From southern rock, to psychedelic elements in „GrackleKing“ or blues rock in „Fox in the Henhouse“. Whichmusic from other artists had an influence on this record?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Some Of the big ones that influenced this album are ZZ Top, Black Sabbath and Heart.
Sounds Of South: „Colorado“ is a very personal Song. Is it important foryou to write about personal experiences?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Absolutely, we are nothing without our experiences. The songs are not always autobiographical but sometimes you go with what you know.
Sounds Of South: What did it mean to you, working with Austin Jenkins? Did he have a big influence on your musical ideas?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: We really respect Austin Jenkins and Josh Block and we trust them which is the most important. We had a good idea of what we wanted going into the studio but they were very helpful when we would get stuck. They did what great producers should do. Sonically and creatively they helped this record come to life.
Sounds Of South: The Niles City Studio is very famous for its lo-fiproduction. What do you prefer more: streaming oranalog?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: We used both. We aren’t afraid of technology but we prefer the sound and warmth of analog gear…. and we are a real band that plays together.
Sounds Of South: You have become very successful. What has changedin your life?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Not much. We are constantly working and pushing to be better. We have a taste now we want more.
Sounds Of South: Quaker City Night Hawks is an very unusal name of a band. What’s the„story“ behind it?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: It comes from a Mark Twain book called “The Innocents Abroad”. The group of fellas he would gamble and drink with called themselves the Night Hawks and the ship they were on during the story was called the Quaker City. It writes itself.
Sounds Of South: If you had the choice, which artist would you like tosupport on stage or tour?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: We would love to hit the road with Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats or The Record Company or any of Jack Whites projects… hell even Post Malone would be great.
Sounds Of South: What are you looking forward to the most about your upcoming tour?
Aaron Haynes/Quaker City Night Hawks: Getting back to the European fans. They actually listen to music. It’s refreshing to have audiences that care about music and want to hear every detail.
