Gut 1 1\/2 Stunden vor ihrem Gig im Rahmen der SOUND OF NASHVILLE-Reihe zusammen mit Kyle Daniel und Shy Carter als Support, hatten wir die Gelegenheit, mit der sympathischen Kanadierin im gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigen Backstage-Bereich des K\u00f6lner Helios37 ein paar Worte zu wechseln.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Hallo Lindsay, willkommen in K\u00f6ln. Du bist, soweit mir bekannt, jetzt zum dritten Mal in der Domstadt. Hattest du ein wenig Gelegenheit, dir auch ein paar Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten der rheinischen Metropole anzusehen?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Vielen Dank, es ist so toll, wieder hier zu sein. Ja, es ist das dritte, vielleicht vierte Mal, und ich liebe K\u00f6ln. Es macht Spa\u00df, hier zu sein. Ich freu mich riesig, bei euch in\u00a0 Deutschland ein paar Shows spielen zu k\u00f6nnen. Wir haben echt einen verr\u00fcckten Terminplan. Gerade noch gereist, geht es schon vom Zug zum Soundcheck, aber danach hatte ich noch ein wenig Zeit vor der Show in die Stadt zu gehen. So verweilte ich dort ein wenig, der Dom ist einer meiner Favoriten auf diesem Planeten.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Deutschland und New Country \u2013 passt das aus deinen bisherig erlebten Erfahrungen gut zusammen?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Absolut, ich komme ja urspr\u00fcnglich aus Kanada und bin dann nach Nashville gegangen. Aber immer, wenn ich in Deutschland bin, f\u00fchle ich mich zuhause wie in Kanada. Jeder ist hier so nett und einladend, das Essen ist gro\u00dfartig und alle sind so freundlich. Ich f\u00fchle mich hier sehr heimisch. Und ich lieb euer Bier, was will man also mehr, haha?<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Wie bist du bis dato durch die Corona-Pandemie gekommen?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Die letzten Jahre waren auf viele Arten herausfordernd f\u00fcr alle von uns, aus ganz unterschiedlichen Gr\u00fcnden. Ich glaube allerdings, dass wir aus diesen Lektionen einiges an wertvollen Dingen mitnehmen k\u00f6nnen, zum Beispiel zu Hause mit der Familie zu sein, ein bisschen ausgeglichener zu werden, oder ein wenig zu entschleunigen. Das habe ich zumindest daraus gelernt und ich bin daf\u00fcr auch dankbar. Wir waren st\u00e4ndig unterwegs, tourten um die ganze Welt, aber es war sch\u00f6n, um mal kurz inne zu halten, zu Hause zu sein, mal Lebensmittel in den K\u00fchlschrank zu packen, und einfach mal mit der Familie zusammen zu sein. Ich bin nat\u00fcrlich aber auch froh, wieder zur\u00fcck zu sein und live spielen zu k\u00f6nnen. Ich denke wir haben viel gelernt in den letzten Jahren.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>W\u00e4hrend bei den Superstars (u. a. Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran) bei ausverkauften Stadien hierzulande der Euro beim Besucher locker zu sitzen scheint, k\u00e4mpfen die kleineren und mittleren Clubs dank Corona und Ukraine-Krieg und den damit verbundenen Preisexplosionen und Zuschauerverlusten massiv ums \u00dcberleben. Hast du Ideen, wie man dort in naher Zukunft wieder in die Gewinnzone zur\u00fcckkehren k\u00f6nnte?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Das ist wirklich eine gute Frage! Ja, wie schon gesagt, es war sehr anstrengend f\u00fcr alle von uns, auf so viele unterschiedliche Arten in den letzten Jahren und du sagst, dass die gro\u00dfen Arenen es bei bestimmten K\u00fcnstlern leichter h\u00e4tten, wieder auf die Beine zu kommen. Ich meine allerdings, dass es eher an guten Shows liegt, die K\u00fcnstler kommen zu lassen und die Leute daran zu erinnern, wie einzigartig Livemusik ist. Wir neigen dazu zu Hause rumzusitzen, Musik auf unseren Computern und Handies anzugucken, beziehungsweise anzuh\u00f6ren, aber nichts von dem kann das Gef\u00fchl einer echten Live-Performance, das Gemeinsame oder diese speziellen Momente an einem Austragungsort zu erleben, ersetzen. Man muss die Leute langsam wieder aus ihren H\u00e4usern herauslocken und ihnen nicht die Dinge st\u00e4ndig vorhalten und jammern, dass keiner mehr zu den Shows kommt, sondern gerade als kleine Location jetzt in die Zukunft investieren. Ich glaube fest, dass die Leute dann zur\u00fcckkommen werden.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Wie sieht die Situation in den Staaten aus? Gibt es dort auch Auswirkungen zu bemerken?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Ja, dankenswerter Weise ging es Mitte des letzten Jahres mit den Shows wieder bergauf. Auch hier gab es wie du schon anmerktest, viel kleine Clubs, die ihre Probleme hatten und so gerade zurecht kamen, aber irgendwie durchhielten und wieder \u00f6ffneten. Die Shows sind nun wieder zur\u00fcck und die Leute dort verstehen jetzt, dass Livemusik wichtig ist. Und, ehrlich gesagt, wenn\u00a0 die Staaten ein Abbild oder eine Vorahnung dessen sind, wie es\u00a0 sich entwickeln wird, habe ich ein gutes Gef\u00fchl f\u00fcr all diese kleineren Clubs.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Du bist aktuell noch mit dem 2020er Album \u201eHeart Theory<\/a>\u201c unterwegs. Obwohl wir dich bisher als recht lebenslustige K\u00fcnstlerin wahrgenommen haben , guckst du auf dem Cover recht grimmig drein und auch die Songs sind ja als Abrechnung mit deinem bisherigen Beziehungsleben zu interpretieren. War es denn wirklich so schlimm?:-)
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Haha, wei\u00dft du, ich glaube wir alle erleben mal diesen Herzschmerz. Ich wollte eigentlich nur aufrichtige Songs schreiben und ich meine, es w\u00e4re nicht authentisch, immer nur ‚Friede-Freude-Eierkuchen‘-Lieder zu kreieren. Wir gehen alle mal durch schwierige Beziehungen. Wir verlieren Jobs, wir reisen durch die Welt, es sterben Familienmitglieder. Wir m\u00fcssen uns mit diesen schwierigen Situationen auseinandersetzen. Diese Scheibe ist f\u00fcr mich ein Symbol, solche Dinge zu verarbeiten. All diese Sachen, dazu die Pandemie, waren f\u00fcr mich ein wichtiger Prozess, wor\u00fcber ich dann einfach geschrieben habe. Vom Coverbild, \u00fcber den ersten Track der Platte, befand ich mich wie in einem Schockzustand, durch den ich dann gegangen bin. All diese Emotionen, die wir f\u00fchlen, von Ablehnung, Zorn, Handeln bis hin zu Depressionen, um am Ende einen Ort zu finden, diese Dinge zu akzetieren. Ich wollte wirklich ein Album kreieren, das man vom Anfang bis Ende h\u00f6ren kann und wo man diesen Fortschritt sp\u00fcrt.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South<\/span>: Der Abschlusstrack \u201eReady To Love\u201c suggeriert zumindest den Blick nach vorn. Ist mittlerweile Besserung in Sicht?:-)
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Ja, absolut. Es ist schon komisch, all die Musik, die ich momentan schreibe, ist sehr fr\u00f6hlich und zum Wohlf\u00fchlen, wie\u00a0 es mal war. Ich glaube, dass Musik auf so viele Arten heilsam ist. Es ist schon am\u00fcsant, wenn du einen Lernprozess durchl\u00e4ufst und wie es dann dein Leben ver\u00e4ndern kann. Ich f\u00fchlte, ein Heartbreak-Album schreiben zu m\u00fcssen und jetzt ist meine Musik vom Stil her, wieder viel fr\u00f6hlicher.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Du hast ja im Verlauf der letzten Jahre mit richtigen Gr\u00f6\u00dfen der Nashville-Szene getourt, beziehungsweise auch auf den Platten zusammengearbeitet. Welcher der Kollegen\/innen hat dich am meisten beeindruckt und warum?
Lindsay Ell:<\/span> Ja, ich liebe es mit Musikern zu touren, von denen ich noch was lernen kann. Ich habe viel von Brad Paisley<\/a> und Keith Urban<\/a> mitgenommen, vor allem ihre Art des Gitarrespielens. Mit Keith Urban auf Tour gewesen zu sein, war unglaublich, er ist so ein toller Songschreiber, Gitarrist und Performer. Auch mit Blake Shelton<\/a> das Touren im vergangenen Jahr war klasse. Dazu habe ich einige Gigs mit Little Big Town<\/a> gespielt.\u00a0 Es macht soviel Spa\u00df mit Leuten die B\u00fchne zu teilen, zu denen man aufschauen kann. Vor ein paar Wochen durfte ich die Show f\u00fcr Shania Twain<\/a> er\u00f6ffnen, das war schon eine echte Nummer auf meiner Wunschliste und ich kann noch immer nicht glauben, dass das geschehen ist. Daf\u00fcr bin ich sehr dankbar. Es ist ein gutes Beispiel daf\u00fcr, wenn wenn du dich innerlich auf neue Sachen fokussierst, dass du sie auch wahr werden lassen kannst.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Ich pers\u00f6nlich bin ja ein gro\u00dfer Dann Huff-Fan. Von seiner rockmusikalischen Vergangenheit \u00fcber seine Soli bis zu seinen Produktionen \u00fcberzeugt er mich immer wieder. Auf’s Neue Er hat ja dein letztes Album produziert. Als was f\u00fcr einen Menschen hast du ihn kennengelernt?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Dann ist der Gr\u00f6\u00dfte! Er ist so ein unglaubliches Genie in Sachen Produktion und Gitarre spielen. Mit ihm im Studio arbeiten zu d\u00fcrfen war ein fantastisches Erlebnis. Er ist ein humorvoller und auch ganz spezieller Typ. Und Dann Huff ist durch und durch einer der herzlichsten Menschen, die ich je getroffen habe. Es hat Spa\u00df gemacht, mit ihm zu arbeiten und auch viel von ihm bei der Produktion zu lernen. Er ist einer meiner Herzensk\u00fcnstler und es war toll mit ihm gewirkt zu haben.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Wie sehen deine n\u00e4chsten Projekte aus?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Ich bin im Studio schon sehr flei\u00dfig. Ich schreibe bereits an meinem n\u00e4chsten Projekt. Im Herbst wird es neue Musik von mir geben und im n\u00e4chsten Jahr kommt dann die neue Scheibe.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Hi Lindsay, first of all, welcome to Cologne. As far as I know, your already for the third time in the Cathedral City of Cologne, aren’t you? Did u find some time to look for any places of interest at the Metropol of the Rhine as well?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Thank you so much, It’s so great to be here. Yes I Think it is for sure my third, perhaps my forth time, but I love Cologne. I love beeing here, I’ve been excited to play some acts. We have been on such a crazy schedule. I’m even travelling, so we came right from the train to soundcheck, but I have a little time for the downtown before the show, so I might set up a little bit, the dome is one of my favourite places on the planet.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>Germany and New Country-does it fit together from your previous experiences?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Yes, I’m originally from Canada, and I moved down to Nashville. But whenever I’m in Germany, I feel like I’m at home in Canada. Everybody is just so kind and welcoming and the food is amazing and they are just so friendly. I just feel very home. And I love the good beer, what more can you need, haha?<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>How did you get through the Corona pandemic so far?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>The past few years have been challenging in so many different ways for all of us, you know, for a number of differnt reasons. But I think we are able to learn a lot of valuable lessons you know, it’s to be home with your family and feel a little more balanced and be able to slow down with something. That I know I ve learned a lot. I m so grateful for that time. We so used to be on the road, toured around the world, but it was actually nice for a brief moment to be home, put food in my fridge and be with my family and so I m very grateful being back to play live-shows, but I think we learned a lot in the past years.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>While money seems to be pretty loose when it comes to superstars just like Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran with sold out stadions in this country, are small and middle sized clubs ,thanks to corona, the Ukraine war and the connected Inflation to this, just fighting massively to survive. Do you have any ideas, how they could return in the profit zone?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>That is such a good question, you know! Ya, I think it’s been challaging like I said for all of us, in so many ways the last couple of years, and you write that the big venues get back easier on their feet, but I think I just about putting on the good shows and letting artits come and reminding people how special live music is, you know. I think we got used to sitting at home and watching music on our computers and our phones, but nothing will truly replace the feeling of a good live show and getting to see someone in the room and feeling that special moment in a venue. I think it asked people slowly to start coming out of the room to see live music again and don’t remember them how special live music was, not noone come back to my shows and as long the smaller venues are putting on their shows and investing in the future. I do believe that they will come back there.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>What is the current situation in the US? Are there any impacts to remark on this?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Yes, thankfully shows came back in the US in the middle of last year, There were a number of small venues as you said were struggling and just get by and kinda keep open and stay open, but thankfully they kind of made over it build it up a lot of them and shows are coming back and people have learned that live music is important. And honestly, if\u00a0 the US is just even a picture of a foreshadow or what it may look like, I do have a good feeling for all those small venues.<\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>You are currently on the way\/on tour with the 2020th album (Heart Theory). Although we know\/have taken you as a fun-loving artist, you are looking pretty grumpy on the cover and the songs are (probably) to be interpreted as a reckoning on you relationship so far. Was it really that bad?
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Hahah, you know, I think we all go through a heartbreak, I really want to write songs just from a honest place as a songwriter you know and I think it would be inauthentic for me to pretend we always be happy and always smiling. Ah ya, we all go through break-ups that are difficult. We lose jobs, we move across the world, we lose family members, we go through difficult situations. This record to me is just a symbol how we can work through that. Wheather it’s a break-up or losing a love-one or going through the problem of pandemic this record was so important to me too as sort of process to write how it went through it: from the picture on the cover from the first song of the record it hits me in a place of shock and than moving through, you know. All of the emotions we feel from denial to anger to bargaining to depression even and finally getting to a place of acceptance and at the end. I just really want to write an album that you can listen to top to bottom and hear that progression.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>The final track („Reade To Love“) at least suggests looking ahead, (therefore)is there now improvement insight?<\/span>
Lindsay Ell: <\/span>Yes there is! It is so funny now all of the music that I am writing is really happy is really feel good as It has been. I do think music is healing in so many ways. It is amazing when you come through to that what you learn and how much it can change your life. And I do feel I have to write a heartbreak album and all the music I do now is in a much happier style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>In the last years you used to be on tour with very well known Bands of the Nashville scene, respektively cooperated on records as well. What colleague from them used to impresses u most of all?<\/span>
Lindsay Ell: Yeah I have loved touring with so many artists that I would look up to. I learned a lot from Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban, from the way they play the guitar. Touring with Keith was just incredible, he is such an amazing writer and guitar player and performer. I loved being able to tour with Blake Shelton over the past year and have been playing some shows with Little Big Town and so it is just amazing to be able to tour with artits that I really just look up and to be able to share the stage with them. I just opened for Shania Twain a couple of weeks ago and it was just like a massiv thing of my bucked list and I can not believe that it was happening and I am so grateful for it. It is such a good example if you really put your mind on something new you can really make it happen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>I am personally a huge Dann Huff-Fan. He totally always convinced me from his Rock-music past, over his Solos, till his productions. He Used to produce your last album once again. As what kind of person to u get to know of him?<\/span>
Lindsay Ell: Dann is the greatest. He is like such an incredible genius of a producer and a guitar player and obviously one of my idols as a guitar player and to be able to work with him in the studio was just an incredible experience. He is just amazing and special as a person. And through in and out Dann Huff is just one of the kindest hearts I’ll ever meet and i just love working with him and i learned so much from him as a musician producer and to speaking from my hearted artists it was amazing to work with him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds Of South: <\/span>What are your next projects?<\/span>
Lindsay Ell: I have been in the studio busy I have been wrinting my next project. I will have some new music coming up this fall as well as a new record next year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
